What Does the Back of a Vanilla Gift Card Look Like
How to Link Visa Vanilla Gift Cards to PayPal
Are you having trouble using your Visa Vanilla Gift Card? You're not the only one. Many people report problems using these gift cards and many places feel leery about accepting them. Although there may be other ways to solve this problem, I had success accessing the money on the card when I transferred it to my PayPal account. Since most reputable online sites now use PayPal, this solution worked great for me.
First Step: Set Up PayPal Account
- Set up a new PayPal account.
- Once you have made an account, it will ask you if you want to add a credit card or bank. Click credit card.
- Now type in the information requested and the same billing information you entered earlier in step one. Once you have done this, it will ask for a four digit confirmation code to confirm your Visa gift card. To get this number, you'll need to go to Vanilla Visa's website and enter the card information again (see below).
Next: Go to the Vanilla Visa Website
- Go to the Vanilla Visa website.
- Enter your Visa card number (the 16 digit number on the front).
- Right below where you entered your card number, there is another box where you'll enter your serial number, a nine-digit number you'll find if you flip your card over and look at the bottom left.
- After entering both numbers in step four, you should be in Account History. To the left, there should be a drop-down bar with different links right below were it says "Account History." You'll see the link "Register Your Card": click it.
- Now you're on the page to enter your information for online use. Enter the information you will need to get your new PayPal account to accept your card.
Step Three: Go Back to PayPal
In Account Management, scroll down to the transaction dates. You will see that PayPal will have already taken a $1.95 fee but don't worry—once you confirm your card, it will all transfer back.
- To find your four-digit conformation code, look to where PayPal is listed and in the following information you should see something like this:
- 4/29/2010 04:52 AM
- 7156PAYPAL *EXPUSE
- 402-935-7733 , CA
- Reference: 088412
- 160100 POSPreAuthCompletion POSPreAuthCompletion:Checking:NoAccount $1.95
- The four digits before PayPal are your confirmation number (in this example, they're 7156, but you'll need to locate your own).
- Enter that in and—Bam!—you're in business.
Now you can use your PayPal account to pay for stuff online!

What if I Already Have a PayPal Account?
For those who have a PayPal account already, you'll need to add your Visa gift card:
- Log in and at the top click "My Account."
- The bar below will have a few links and at the very right of that bar there is a link that says "Profile": scroll over it and click "add or edit credit card."
- Click "add card." Enter your information and click "add" at the bottom.
- Now, it's going to want a that four-digit confirmation code (to get this, follow instructions above).
Have fun shopping the web with your PayPal account!

I would recommend linking your PayPal account to a credit card such as Capital One, and taking as much money out of PayPal as possible without getting a negative balance. Paypal can close your account at any time. http://pinstor.us/articles/10-best-credit-cards-ca...

Interesting stuff regarding the Visa credit card. I imagine it should shoot to the top of the search engines for Visa Vanilla as I haven't seen much news anywhere else on how to do what you outlined here.
Aggravated on January 05, 2017:
It never asked for a verification code, it just thank you for adding the vanilla visa gift card, and it does not work, every transaction is being denied, and I registered my zip code with it and it's same zip code as my PayPal address

If I add mine to my PayPal account and transfer any payments from my account to the card, can I withdraw the payments in cash from the card at Walmart?

This looks pretty legit, but can one card be used on multiple accounts?

Taryn on October 02, 2012:
It put 240 dollars on this card to buy clothes at an international store online. When I go to register the card to link it to my paypal it says on the visa card site I can't do international purchases even If they are online well I'm not furious or anything :(
Serena on August 03, 2012:
Hi! I clicked on profile(paypal) and it came out as
card type:visa
last 4 digits on card
billing address
action: edit or remove. what do I do?
Chase on June 24, 2012:
It keeps saying "This credit card has been denied by the bank that issued your credit card. For details on why your card was denied, please contact your credit card issuer's customer service department. Or, you may want to try adding a different credit card."
Yet it's registered and has a lot of money in it ):

This is how ittotally works! For Vanillla Visa cards you MUST:
A. "Register" your card at vanilla visa with your zipcode
B. You MUST create a NEW PAYPAL account and:
D. Your name must be First: A GIFT Last: FOR YOU
C. With the shipping you add your real name and address
Terrific! It works and I'm thrilled!
Thanks to all!

I put $400 on a vanilla visa giftcard today, registered it, and linked it to my existing PayPal account with no problem.
Mr. A Gift For You on March 12, 2012:
Shit doesn't work. I have $25 Vanilla Gift Card. I cannot link it to paypal. Although I bought card 4 months ago, misplaced it, just registered today. So maybe it won't work same day I registered it? It only allowed me to enter a zipcode to register, but it is the same zip code as my paypal address. Another question: Is it possible Paypal has cookies on my computer, I have four other paypal accounts, is it linking this new one i did for vanilla with my other paypal accounts?
SleepySlug on February 18, 2012:
You CAN still use this on Paypal, however you have to make a NEW account AND (important part) you have to list your name as First Name: A Gift Last Name: For You
Once I did this my account was able to accept MULTIPLE Vanilla Visa gift cards.

Man these Vanilla Visa cards suck. I had to wait a week before I could use it because I tried it to fill up my gas tank. Even after the gas pump asked for my zip code and I put in the one I entered on the Vanilla Visa website didn't work. I did that a week ahead of time in case the system took awhile. Declined. Great, I tried to use the card for a week after that and declined every time.
I saw the preauthorization on the vanilla website transaction history, and they do warn you about this. I was prepared to get hit with it, but I was not expecting to get rejected for the gas fillup at the ZIP CODE screen, why the heck would it even charge a preauthorization if you haven't even told the gas pump your zip code, that is bass ackwards.
So I wait a week and I can finally use it again. I did a Buy It Now on Ebay, seller said he acccepted PayPal with VISA logo. I go to add the card to PayPal to pay, DENIED. What the F*($#. So now I'm stuck with these purchases on this "VISA" card I can't pay for.
This card has been more trouble than its worth. Even when I did use it at a merchant (bike shop) the owner gave me a hard time saying it didn't look like a legitimate card and he was weary accepting it. I don't blame him since the card number is just printed on. I hope the ebay seller isn't too mad I can't pay for the listing, stupid card, some gift.

Hey for some of you, this option still wont work like it did for me, so anyway all you have to do is CREATE A NEW PAYPAL and add credit card! Now i don't know why but it works.

Has this changed? My paypal transaction does not have any 4 digit code preceding the word "paypal" on the vanilla visa account history screen...

Well i used this and its like loading on to paypal very slowly is this right?
Ed on January 07, 2011:
Someone actually gave me one of these stupid cards for a christmas "gift." Why the hell didn't they just give me cash? They would've saved the $5 activation fee, and I wouldn't be confused as balls as to how to use it. Cash works anywhere. The Vanilla Gift is a gift of inconvenience and frustration...next year, just give me a lump of shit in my stocking and save me the aggrivation!
Ethan on January 02, 2011:
looks good but don't have a card yet so il have to wait till i get one
Disgusted on December 22, 2010:
Their website is down and you cannot register any Vanilla Visa cards, so they are worthless today. I WOULD NEVER NEVER buy one again. They were supposed to be up and running by 11 am and it is 2pm and no such thing. I feel like I have been robbed. Disgusting experience.
pam on December 12, 2010:
cannot get this to work
paypaldontwork on October 07, 2010:
paypal doesn't work with these cards anymore... you can only give your address.
mopar546 on September 28, 2010:
Vanilla now only uses your zip code to register your card instead of name & address. That now makes the card useless for most online transactions.

nvm found it
